SURREY ROCK STAR OF THE DAY!

In the lead up to #AlmostEpic at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival Tamar will be giving you her SURREY ROCK STAR OF THE DAY! There is something about the leafy solitude that inspires headbanging... and if these rock stars can do it, maybe Ashtead girl Tamar can finally get from Almost to Definitely Epic!

"17/7 - SURREY ROCK STAR #1 - PAUL WELLER!

Paul Weller of The Jam is from the ghetto of Woking, the place the song 'A Town Called Malice' is apparently based on! As a 10-year-old my mother took my sister and I, dressed in leather jackets with back-combed hair, to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show at Woking's New Victoria Theatre. It was the beginning of an era in which I would come to love the rock musical form, and undoubtedly inspired a subconscious fondness for suspenders which manifested in my late teens.. just in time for my first outing in them in a particularly rockin' high school production.. Find out more at #AlmostEpic !

"18/7 - SURREY ROCK STAR #2 - ERIC CLAPTON!

Eric is from Ripley. I once fancied a boy from Ripley. I stalked him to an Anti-Flag gig and pretended they were my favourite band too so that we'd fall in love. But instead of falling in love, I fell in the mosh pit and got hit by a shoe.
I haven't gone to a melodic hardcore punk gig since.

We had a Vinyl player in the living room when I was growing up, with millions of Mum and Dad's original records ranging from Dire Straits and The Doors to Michael Jackson. I'd sit there and pick out random ones to listen to, discovering many of my all-time favourite songs along the way. Here's a rockin' rejigged version of one of them: ERIC CLAPTON - LAYLA . #AlmostEpic "

"19/7 - SURREY ROCK STAR #3 - MIKE RUTHERFORD!

Progressive rock artist Mike was a Guildford lad. Guildford holds a lot of memories for me, from ice-skating with my Dad on Sunday mornings as a child to being thrown out of Wetherspoons with my best friend as an 18-year-old. Guildford's never been ready for agressive air-guitaring. Mike had to get out, and so did I.
LEFT: Mike Rutherford. RIGHT: Grown up Good Girls Gone Bad.

What's all this about Good Girls Gone Bad? Find out at #AlmostEpic !

Here's Mike with the Mechanics, a little song for looking back:
MIKE AND THE MECHANICS - OVER MY SHOULDER "

"20/7 - SURREY ROCK STAR #4 - PETER GABRIEL!

Peter Gabriel lives in Chobham. It's like Cobham, but with less twats in Porsches.
I am not referring to the Chelsea football players. They mostly drive Ferraris.

Peter is one of my all-time favourite artists. Solsbury Hill was my Mum's favourite song as a 17-year-old, and then it was mine. My family used to organize a yearly event called 'The Field', where we camped out with all our friends, set up a gigging tent and had our very own Surrey version of Woodstock. One year, as well as jamming with my Groovy Uncle Bob on guitar, and performing some of my own pop songs, my best friend and I also made up and performed a dance routine to this number: SLEDGEHAMMER - PETER GABRIEL .

Want to see some more of my original dance moves? Come see #AlmostEpic !"

"21/7 - SURREY ROCK STAR #5 - JEFF BECK!

Six-time Grammy-Award-Winning Rock Guitarist Jeff Beck was born in Wallington. He was ranked 5th in the Rolling Stones' list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and has played with hardcore rock stars such as Mick Jagger, Jon Bon Jovi and Kate Bush.

Even though I believe I rank #4 in the world for air guitar, I know I could never hope to rival the skills of this Sutton-Borough-born legend.

Wallington Girls was one of our rival schools when I was doing my GCSEs at Nonsuch Girls School in Cheam. Unfortunately I never got to experience this rivalry first hand, because the only sport I've ever been good at is chess, and I had to hide that talent at high school to avoid bog-washing. I never went up against Wallington, which I now see is a good thing, because I have far too much respect to tackle the town that gave us this man:

"22/7 - SURREY ROCK STAR #6 - RICK PARFITT!

Now on Day 6 of the Surrey Rock Star blog I'm starting to be surprised by how many rock stars were actually born in Surrey! There's loads!

Rock Star #6 is Rick Parfitt from the epic band Status Quo! They played recently up the Derby on Epsom Downs, they've rocked all over the world and couldn't help but come back to Surrey... Because they know like I do... that it's secretly the most rocking place of all. Famous for being the band that only ever used three chords... I can totally relate to SQ. I've always been a sucker for the I-V-IV progression... it's the Baba O'Reiley one, also known as the CSI NY theme tune. I used it for Good Girls Gone Bad... want to hear some I-V-IVs?? Don't know what that is but intrigued by frequent use of ellipsis in this passage??
Come and see #AlmostEpic !

This will definitely be one of the tunes on my Epic Playlist when I'm rocking round the world on my Tamar Tour one day... STATUS QUO FOR EPIC ROCK PLAYLIST

"23/7 - SURREY ROCK STAR #7 - GARY PICKARD!

My epic Surrey Rock Star #7 has to be my old guitar teacher, music recording genius, and super good friend, Gary Pickard! He is the best and most epic guitar player I have ever met, and I have so much to thank him for. I went to Gary as a 10 year old to learn guitar, and when I started writing songs we'd record them on his big recording machine! I was on the keys and vocals, he layed down the guitar and bass parts, and we added drum samples to complete the epic rock band sound. Every time I've written a song since, I go to Gary and we record it. I was there just yesterday recording the #AlmostEpic exit music. We were joined by Smokey his Rock and Roll cat!

Gaz has got mad skills, and his rocking guitar riffs and screaming guitar solos are rivalled by none! He took the #AlmostEpic backing tracks from Almost to Definitely Epic! Want to hear them? Come see the show !
